These colors have fallen out of fashion for 2022, according to interior experts (2024)

Millennial pink is amongst the colors that designers predict we will be leaving behind in 2021 according to an Interior Designer Trend Survey conducted by 1stDibs.

The luxury online marketplace 1stdibs, surveyed over 750 interior designers to reveal the color trends that will be dominating our homes in 2022, but also the colors we will be turning away from.

Least popular colors in 2022

1stDibs revealed that it was primary and secondary colors that are soon to be falling out of fashion. Millennial pink, tangerine, light yellow, violet, and bright red were all found to be the least popular colors for 2022. All of these hues received less than 5% of designer votes – while red earned just 1%.

Navy and gray are on the way out

The report also highlighted a declining interest in navy (down 43%), mustard yellow (down 27%), and light gray (down 25%). Yes, while gray has seen an uninterrupted reign over recent paint trends, its reign may conclude in 2022.

However, this shift is perhaps only expected in the interiors world, as Anthony Barzilay Freund, the editorial director at 1stDibs, explains. ‘The design industry is always changing – new trends emerge, old trends are reinterpreted, and our perception of beauty continually evolves,’ he says.

‘Additionally, the last two years have been unlike anything we’ve ever experienced, with our homes and corporate offices taking on new meaning.’

Most popular color in 2022

While navy may have lost its appeal amongst designers, another blue hue has emerged in its place: Cobalt. This top-ranking tone is expected to be the most popular blue for 2022 – and we anticipate it will reset interior design trends for months ahead.

‘Navy has had a good, long run in the world of interior design, pleasing to people for its evocation of nature (water and sky) and the way it seems to bring a bit of the outdoors inside. But the eye needs to travel to new palettes,’ says 1stDibs’ Editorial Director, Tony Freund.

‘Cobalt blue has the appeal of Navy (the colors of nature are still very popular according to our poll) but with a surprising kick,’ he adds.

With its ‘vivid, joyful and fresh’ aura, Cobalt blue will liven your scheme – whether it is interpreted through small accessories (such as blue-and-white Chinese porcelain) or a statement wall. We expect this color will dominate our color habits for many seasons to come.
