Can you renew an expired teaching certificate in NY? ›

Reissuance of an Initial Certificate

An expired or expiring initial certificate can be reissued for a period of five (5) years if the certificate holder has not completed the three (3) years teaching experience requirement and/or the master's degree requirement for Professional certification.

Professional licenses must be regularly renewed to remain valid. Like your driver's license, if your teaching certificate has expired, you cannot teach in California's public schools. Some private schools may be unwilling to hire you if your teaching credential has lapsed.

New York State requires that all teachers, school leaders (administrators), and pupil personnel service providers who are employed or wish to become employed in the State's public schools hold a New York State certificate.

Five-Year Preliminary or Level I teaching credentials cannot be renewed. To continue to teach in the public schools of California, you must complete all of the requirements for either the clear or Level II credential before the expiration date of your preliminary or Level I credential.

The first part, the preliminary credential, takes about 2 years to complete. The second part, the clear credential, takes about another 2 years to complete. A clear teaching credential is granted when all the requirements, set by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, are met.

Initial certificates for classroom teachers, school building leaders, and school counselors are valid for five years.

Reinstatement of Certification

You may apply for an extension online. In the event that you need to pursue reinstatement, you will be required to pay an expiration fee and complete necessary PD hours to bring your certificate back into valid status.

Validity Period

An educator is eligible to renew an expired Professional certificate up to ten school years past the expiration date. Although the educator may renew the expired certificate at any time within this ten-year period, the renewal credits must have been earned within the five-year period prior to the request for renewal.
